President Trump Takes the Reigns in Historic Meeting with Kim Jong

President Barack Obama summarily brushed off an attempt by former basketball star Dennis Rodman to broker a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the former basketball star said Monday night.

North Korea has nothing like a free press, so it is unclear in exactly what function the North Korean "reporters" were serving.

North Korea, however, has shown little appetite for surrendering nuclear weapons it considers vital to the survival of Kim's dynastic rule. It's the first time a sitting US president has met with N. Korea's chief, making the summit historic and quite the diplomatic gesture. The two posed for pictures briefly before walking over to an awning and appeared quite cordial in their greeting, both smiling as they shook hands for a second time.

He and Trump are set to meet Tuesday morning in the first summit of its kind between a leader of North Korea and a sitting USA president.

"I feel really great". I still kept going back.

"I thought I was doing a charity event", he said.

Kim smiled as he heard the translator interpret the president's remarks, before weighing in with a brief statement of his own.

The summit is scheduled to begin at 9am, the White House said. Later, at a bilateral meeting with aides from both sides, Trump said, "Mr. Chairman, it's a great honor to be with you, and I know that we will have tremendous success together".

However, it now appears that the U.S.is confident tings are going smoothly. USA officials have said a best case scenario would be that it serves as a launching pad for negotiations that would provide Kim with physical security and his closed off nation with economic assurances in exchange for irreversibly dismantling his country's nuclear capabilities.

But other reports said it was Kim who made a decision to leave early, even though Trump was willing to stick around.

Kim said he wanted to express his gratitude to President Trump for making the meeting happen. And I believed in North Korea.

The meeting is also a striking departure for a relationship that just months ago was defined by highly personal insults and rhetoric that seemed to raise the possibility for imminent military confrontation.

It's Kim's pursuit of nuclear weapons that gives his meeting with Trump such high stakes. They will be joined only by translators and will spend a couple of hours before admitting their close advisers to the meeting.

US President Donald Trump (R) waves as he and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un look on from a veranda during their historic US-North Korea summit, at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

"The entire world is watching the historic summit between (North Korea) and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit", Kim told Lee through an interpreter. North Korea has always been a useful buffer between China and USA forces in South Korea.

Pompeo added the U.S.is "hopeful" the summit will "set the conditions for future productive talks".

On Monday evening, Pompeo said that the US' "ultimate objective" remains the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, and that Washington is willing to provide "unique security assurances" if Pyongyang agrees to do so.
