Naperville officer rescues toddler running on Route 59

Sgt. Anthony Mannino is being hailed as a hero after he rescued a 1-year-old from a busy highway near Aurora, Illinois.

A Naperville police officer was caught on camera rescuing a toddler wandering on a busy road. Then as he drew closer, Mannino realized it was actually a toddler wandering dangerously close to traffic.

"Luckily, no one was hurt, and we attribute that to Sgt. Mannino's observation while on patrol and quick reaction, placing his squad vehicle and himself between the child and traffic", the department wrote on its Facebook page. Mannino parked his cruiser to block traffic, then ran to the little boy who was eventually reunited with his mother.

"You're OK. You're OK", said Mannino, when he caught up to the boy. The boy runs away from the sergeant, prompting the officer to sprint after the boy south along Route 59. The child was out for only a matter of minutes before Mannino spotted him. Luckily, no one was hurt, and we attribute that to Sgt. Mannino's observation while on patrol and quick reaction, placing his squad auto and himself between the child and traffic.

Mannino says the mother showed up moments later and "obviously was very emotional". Police ruled the incident an accident.

No charges were filed, according to WGN.
