Florida homeowners warned over alligators two days before woman killed

She was a frequent visitor to Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park, but authorities have not said why she opted to go there Friday morning.

Divers found Matsuki's body in a lake, while Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials stated that they were able to positively identify the woman from evidence gathered from the necropsy of a 3.8-meter (12.5-foot) alligator that attacked and killed her.

"Search teams located the body of Shizuka Matsuki at approximately 9:49 p.m., June 8, 2018 at the Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park lake in Davie", according to spokesman Robert Klepper, of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Dale Engle told the Sun-Sentinel. Her dogs, one with a fresh wound, were taken to Broward County Animal and Care and Adoption.

A man told detectives that he saw Matsuki walking her dogs in the park.

According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Isla del Sol Homeowners Association sent an email to its residents shortly after the six-foot gator was trapped. It warned residents to be mindful that gators, snakes and other wildlife lived in the area. "The FWC will be conducting a thorough investigation into this incident", he said. "It's such a sad story, I can't even process it...something like this is so freakish".

"The witness who called us went to the area where he thought that they had been walking, and he immediately spotted an alligator", Davie Police Detective Vivian Gallinal told WPLG.

"We will also be implementing a public information campaign with our residents to remind them of these natural hazards", he said.

Fatal attacks on humans remain rare, however. "They think every time they see someone near the water that they have a sandwich, a potato chip, or anything that they're accustomed to eating". While they are common today, over-hunting nearly drove American alligators to extinction in the 1950's.
