'Disappointing': Experts React To The United States-North Korea Summit

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference after his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore June 12, 2018.

Following diplomatic meetings with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, President Donald Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity that he believes the North Korean regime will begin working toward denuclearization "virtually immediately". Sometimes I felt foolish doing it.

He added that it's "totally premature" to discuss the United States withdrawing its nuclear umbrella from the Korea peninsula in exchange for the total denuclearization of North Korea. Trump praised what had been achieved at the summit calling it a "new chapter" in relations with the North.

One South Korean official said he initially thought Trump had mis-spoke.

South Korea said last month that the issue of USA troops stationed there was unrelated to any future peace treaty with North Korea and that American forces should stay even if such an agreement were signed.

His statement was quickly portrayed by critics as a major, unreciprocated concession to a country that only previous year was threatening Seoul and Washington with nuclear war.

U.S. President Donald Trump's declaration on Tuesday that he meant to end joint military exercises in Korea seemed to be news to both South Korean and U.S. military officials.

"I was shocked when he called the exercises 'provocative, ' a very unlikely word to be used by a US president", the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because it was a politically sensitive issue.

Trump's comments will be questioned by many in South Korea and beyond, with some seeing in them an effort by North Korea to drive a wedge between Seoul and Washington. Trump described the exercises as "very provocative" and said Pyongyang "very much appreciated" seeing the exercises end. Since the 1970s, the United States and South Korea have held a major summertime exercise called Ulchi Freedom Guardian that involves tens of thousands of troops.

"Otto Warmbier is a very special person and he will be for a very long time in my life".

"I think without the rhetoric, we wouldn't have been here", Mr. Trump said.

According to the joint statement, both sides also agreed to recover and return remains of soldiers who were killed or missing in action during the Korean War so they can be repatriated.
