Robbie Williams to perform at World Cup opening ceremony

A Brazilian fan holding on to the World Cup trophy after the country 7-1 defeat to Germany at the 2014 FIFA World Cup semi-final. The 27-year-old now only trails Pele (77) and Ronaldo (62).

Robbie Williams will fulfil his childhood dream and open the Football World Cup. FIFA's strategic body decided on a number of important competition matters, including another step in the bidding process for the 2026 World Cup.

Only eight of the 211 official affiliate nations have had the distinction of lifting the prestigious symbol of worldwide football supremacy.

"The opening match is always a very symbolic one - it is that instant when you realise that the big moment you, as a player or fan, have been waiting for for four years has finally arrived", he said.

"The concentration and competitiveness of the team was laudable", Tite told reporters.

This is by no means a rushed conclusion.

When the Federation Internationale de Football Association council meets ahead of this year's World Cup tournament held in Russia on Wednesday, the top priority will be deciding between Morocco and a joint North American bid as hosts of the 2026 edition of the World Cup. We had the likes of Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller (Germany) in 2010. Benzema was expected to be recalled ahead of Euro 2016 but, despite rumours of a potential return, he was not selected as the team finished runners-up in the tournament.

Neymar missed the final three month's of Paris Saint-Germain's season after breaking his foot in February but has returned fit for Brazil and scored for the second straight friendly. However, Brazil are not blessed with an abundance of defensive talent and his omission has come as a surprise to many.

Brazilian optimism must, however, be tempered in the reality that Brazil enters nearly all major tournaments as favourites. "I think it's going to be a great tournament".

Former Brazil striker Ronaldo will also feature at the event.

That philosophy has been strategically upgraded with migrant creativity and athleticism added to the already historically tough German mettle.

Furthermore, the team still have their inspirational forward in Radamel Falcao who is likely to play his final World Cup. Maybe the little genius will finally rise to the occasion and do what the entire football world knows he needs to do: win the ultimate prize in his game.

No one is really expecting this squad to lift the World Cup in July, but if they can work together and combine their talents as a collective whole, they can surprise a few teams and go deep in the competition. I doubt very much it will happen.
