Oldbury magistrate 'delighted' by OBE in Birthday Honours

The Scottish writer, 52, who has been a teacher in state schools for almost 30 years, is made an MBE for services to literature in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

This is what the honours system should be all about, recognising not just those in the public eye whose achievements are familiar to us all, but giving due credit to those who go about their good deeds unnoticed and unthanked by those outside the small sphere in which their work is known.

Julie Bates from New South Wales was also recognised for her work in the field of community health, particularly through harm reduction programs for sex workers and people with substance abuse issues, and to those living with HIV/AIDS. "We can do better than this and we will continue to strive to do better", Stone added.

"Women have always achieved great things and I am pleased to see so many of them recognised this year", he said Monday.

Defoe said he felt "mixed emotions", with the award coming nearly a year after the death of six-year-old football mascot Bradley Lowery, with whom the player struck up a strong friendship as the little boy battled a rare childhood cancer.

Joshua, who is looking to take on American Deontay Wilder or Russian Alexander Povetkin before the end of the year, was awarded his OBE for services to boxing.

In the musical world, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite is honoured with an MBE, under her real name Niomi McLean-Daley, for services to music, while Mobo Awards founder Kanya King receives a CBE for services to music and culture.

"I like to think this award honours that, and the importance of literature and creativity in the classroom".

Christine Ferguson was made a Member in the General Division for services to the community of Gundagai, local government, parliament and politics.

In total 1,057 people have received an award in 2018.
