Justify Wins the Triple Crown

The Belmont Stakes, to be held for the 150th time, is the longest of the triple crown races.

And it he does that, Justify will become horse racing the second Triple Crown victor in four years.

Justify is now the 13th horse to win the greatest honor of horse-racing, and only the second since 1998.

Baffert became just the second trainer to win two Triple Crowns, following James "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons, who won all three races with the father-son pair of Gallant Fox (1930) and Omaha (1935).

He became the first horse in 136 years to win the Kentucky Derby without having raced as a juvenile, then hung on in a surreal fog to win by a half-length in the Preakness three weeks ago.

Gronkowski finished second in the 1 1/2 mile race.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report. He didn't compete as a 2-year-old.

Oddsmakers have liked Justify for quite some time.

In the Kentucky Derby, he showed he could run in the mud in a crowded, 20-horse field.

It seems only yesterday, but it was actually February 18 that Justify loudly announced his presence in roaring off to a 9 ½-length victory in his Santa Anita debut.

Justify defied the hard post position along the rail, breaking well and taking the lead within seconds. Once that happened, the race set up perfectly for Justify, and he was never headed in this race.

It was the first of five mounts Smith had on the 13-race card. "There's no one more deserving than him".

"He was showing me the same signs", Baffert said after Justify prevailed for the sixth time in a scant 111 days. "The Apollo curse is something I don't even think about".

Baffert will saddle a second horse: 30-1 shot Restoring Hope. I knew this horse was doing well. "So, we'll take him on and see what happens". To train a horse like that, he's just a magnificent animal.
