HBO Has Officially Ordered A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel Pilot

It will reportedly focus on the GoT world's transition from the Age of Heroes to a time of darkness, revealing bad secrets in Westeros' history and potentially the true origins of the White Walkers.

Goldman will serve as showrunner and will executive produce alongside Martin as well as fellow GOT co-executive producer Vince Gerardis and Damages and Bloodline co-creator/exec producer Daniel Zelman.

HBO has ordered a pilot for the first of its five potential Game of Thrones spin-offs and will travel back in time deep into Westeros' complicated history. In addition to Goldman, the other writers developing the projects have been Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Brian Helgeland (Legend), and Carly Wray (Mad Men, The Leftovers) with the level of involvement from Martin varying from project to project.

HBO put four possible "Thrones" spinoffs into development in 2017. I hear that another of the scripts could get a green light though there is no rush or pressure to do so. In January, president of programming Casey Bloys told Deadline the network could approve "anywhere from zero to five" of them, but "probably more likely around one". They eventually tried to invade Westeros during the longest winter on record, 8,000 years before Robert's (Mark Addy) Rebellion which was the pre-cursor event for the original Game of Thrones series.

Despite this early glimpse of what we can expect from the new series, we still don't have a title or a timeline for when it will be released.

Game of Thrones returns for its final season in 2019.

The pilot order is not yet a full series pickup, but it does give us our first strong indication that HBO is truly moving forward with expanding the world of Westeros on television.

The Goldman/Martin projects joins HBO's other current drama pilots, Damon Lindeloff's Watchmen, Euphoria starring Zandaya, and Run. She's known for the Kingsman movie series, as well as Stardust, Kick-Ass and two X-Men blockbusters.
