Stephens overpowers Kasatkina to enter semifinals

"I think everything will be normal".

The US is guaranteed a French Open finalist after Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens advanced to the semi-finals at Roland Garros on Tuesday.

After simply being swept aside in the US Open final back in September, Keys was looking much stronger here, with the younger of the two Americans looking confident when serving despite that wobble in the third game. She played great. I played good, too, just the matter of a couple of points that didn't go my way and went in her way.

The 10th-seeded Stephens' opponent in Saturday's final will be Simona Halep, who emphatically ended the impressive French Open run of 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza by defeating her 6-1, 6-4.

Keys briefly rallied to pull one break back, but Stephens did not waste her second opportunity, sealing victory on her first match point with a glorious backhand victor down the line.

Muguruza, a two-time major champion, entered the semifinals having not lost a set in the tournament.

"Obviously she's No. 1 in the world". 'And whenever she's at a tournament, she will be around and be helping out. Trailing by a set and looking tired against a resurgent Angelique Kerber, the scores flashed that Garbine Muguruza had just outclassed Maria Sharapova on Phillippe Chatrier for the loss of three games.

But it won't have any impact, she believes: 'Honestly, the Open feels like it was 12 years ago at this point.

Stephens and Kasatkina have never met before on Tour.

"I'm not ever going to try to be a person that isn't nice, so that feels more authentic to me and, you know, I think I'm still doing okay".

"I think the biggest thing is just staying so level-headed after being down a break in the first", Keys said.

For an hour, Simona Halep had been playing with fire during her quarterfinal match on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Stephens hasn't dropped a set since.

In all, Keys made 41 unforced errors, 30 more than Stephens. She was neutralizing so well.

"She was better than me today", Kasatkina said.

On the men's side Thursday, there were no shockers.

Men's quarterfinals - No. 11 Diego Schwartzman leads No. 1 Rafael Nadal, 6-4, 3-5, suspended by rain.

Stephens and Kasatkina traded breaks early in the match, before the American produced some ferocious hitting at the end of a marathon eighth game to give herself the chance to serve for the opening set. Now that, certainly, was unusual. "Maybe the day when you can beat Rafa was yesterday". When we get on the court, it's time to compete.

The Spaniard will be up against Juan Martin del Potro, who overcame Marin Cilic 7-6, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in another delayed quarter-final.

Unseeded Italian Marco Cecchinato won the fourth set after a marathon tiebreak to knock former champion Novak Djokovic out of Roland Garros.

Halep, who lost in last year's final, broke the 16th-seeded Belgian's serve six times on Court Philippe Chatrier. "I was close to quit". And now I don't have any words to describe this moment.

Makarova played alongside countrywoman Anna Kalinskaya and Vesnina teamed up with Jelena Ostapenko at Roland Garros.

"To have two Americans in the semifinals of the French Open, I think, is pretty incredible", said the 25-year-old.
