Robin Williams HBO documentary releases first trailer

The first trailer from the forthcoming documentary on comedian Robin Williams is out from HBO Documentary Films.

The clip also sees Williams addressing his fear of abandonment that stemmed from his childhood, and includes a discussion of his drug use and voicemails he left for friends, including Crystal.

Directed by Marina Zenovich and produced by Alex Gibney and Shirel Kozak, Come Inside My Mind features interviews with Lewis Black, Pam Dawber, Whoopi Goldberg, Eric Idle, David Letterman, David Steinberg and more.

Robin Williams was a complex comedian both onstage and off stage. In May, a biography of the actor titled Robin, written by Dave Itzkoff claimed that Williams suffered from Lewy body dementia, which drove him to despair and ultimately, suicide. "I just use characters as a vehicle for me", he also says.

Billy Crystal talks about the amusing phone messages Williams would leave for him.

In the trailer, the comedian says "stand-up is survival".

Williams' son Zak reflects on his father. "For me, that's jazz, that's what I have to do", along with footage of Williams performing comedy sets at various times throughout his career.

Behind-the-scenes, Williams battled a crippling addiction to alcohol and some serious mental health issues, which eventually led him to commit suicide back in 2014.

"Come Inside My Mind" will drop on July 16 exclusively on HBO.
