Fiat Chrysler Is Recalling 4.8 Million Vehicles Over Cruise Control Flaw

Australian drivers have been caught up in the mass Fiat Chrysler vehicle recall affecting the United States and Canada, but it's now unclear how many vehicles in Australia are affected.

FCA will be notifying customers next week and the company recommends that owners don't use the cruise control system until their vehicle has been equipped with updated software to correct the problem.

It spans the 2014 to 2019 model years, and includes popular models like the Ram 1500 pickup truck, Chrysler Pacifica minivan, and Jeep Wrangler SUV.

Fiat said the exact number and model breakdown of Australian vehicles affected won't be known until early next week, though its understood only petrol automatic engines are of concern.

Fiat Chrysler said that in certain driving conditions, its cruise control systems automatically initiate acceleration to maintain speed.

In the meantime, the company is advising Australian motorists engaging in the cruise control system to be ready to use the foot brake if needed.

The engine stop button also wouldn't work, but the driver was able halt the SUV and shift into park while the brakes "smoked significantly". Regardless of which option is used, cruise control will be cancelled once the auto is put in park.

It was separately fined $70 million by US regulators in 2015 for failing to report vehicle crash deaths and injuries since 2003.

But the brakes are created to overpower the engine and the vehicles could still be stopped. After the testing uncovered the trouble, FCA said it reviewed consumer complaints and found one that may be related. That happened in a 2017 Dodge Journey, which had been supplied as a rental auto. "It was still running at an engine speed to support 70 miles per hour and fighting the brakes", the driver wrote. Most of the vehicles being recalled cover the 2014-2018 model years. The company is urging customers to follow the recall instructions and get the repairs done as soon as possible.

Fiat Chrysler shares were down 2 percent in afternoon trading in NY on the recall.
