Britain's Prince Harry marries United States actress Meghan Markle at Windsor

The wedding was a global event, thanks to Harry's status as a senior British royal and Markle's celebrity after starring on the US television series "Suits" for seven years.

They are not immediately embarking on a honeymoon and have their first royal engagement as wife and husband scheduled at Buckingham Palace Tuesday.

Other members of the royal family looked decidedly bemused.

Firebrand US pastor Michael Curry delivered a full-throttle address invoking slaves and the power of love, and a gospel choir sang "Stand By Me".

The bride will arrive at the church with her mother, Doria Ragland, 61, with whom she was spent Friday night at a luxury hotel. Security was tight and visitors had to pass through police search points set up around the castle, home to 39 English monarchs since 1066. This was about 40 minutes before the ceremony, which began at noon.

To kick off the festivities, Queen Elizabeth II honored her red-headed, 33-year-old grandson with a new title: the Duke of Sussex, making the 36-year-old Markle the Duchess of Sussex.

At their wedding, the crowd included stars such as George and Amal Clooney, Sir Elton John and David and Victoria Beckham, as well as Meghan's former "Suits" co-stars. After the exchange, Harry's Aunt, Lady Jane Fellowes, who is the older sister of his late mother Princess Diana, gave a reading. But their reactions after the ceremony became instant memes, as fans shared GIFs of Charlotte's exaggerated royal wave and George's smaller, seemingly agitated gesture on social media.

The bride's father Thomas Markle also followed the wedding on television and voiced regret he was unable to attend, TMZ reported.

Revellers also packed into bars to watch as far afield as Sydney, Hong Kong and Markle's native Los Angeles, for what is likely to be the last big British royal wedding for a generation.

The service was conducted by the Dean of Windsor with Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury and spiritual head of the Anglican Church, overseeing the exchange of vows.

The UK's prime minister, Theresa May, took to Twitter to wish the newlyweds well. The prince had people wondering what he said to Meghan, with some thinking he told her, "I'm so lucky", while others thinking he said, "I miss you".

Elizabeth famously described 1992 as an "annus horribilis" (horrible year) after three of her four children's marriages failed, including Charles' marriage to Diana, and part of Windsor Castle was badly damaged by fire. Harry's best man and brother, the Duke of Cambridge, acted as compere.

The royal family expressed gratitude to all those who enjoyed the wedding, saying on its official Twitter account: "Thank you to everyone who came to Windsor and those who followed from around the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and the world today". After so many questions about the dress, the tiara, the cake, the flowers, walking down the aisle - and with whom - the now Duchess of Sussex faces the biggest one yet: What's next?
