Nationally the Top 5 for girls was Emma, Olivia, Ava, Isabella, Sophia and Mia. The two top the list of most popular names given to babies born in OH past year, according to the Social Security Administration.

In addition to each state's top baby names (and names for US territories), Social Security's website has a list of the 1,000 most popular boys and girls names for 2017.

Noah and Olivia are also popular names nationwide. In Oregon, the most popular name for girls in 2017 was also Emma, but closely followed by Olivia.

Few things are as delightfully fickle as naming a baby - no matter how much thought we think we put into it. Trends in the popularity of names - or lack thereof - for newborns dip and spike like a roller coaster, leaving even sociologists scratching their heads. To the 208 recorded Emmas in OR, 207 baby girls were named Olivia-pretty close. All five were in the Top 10 for OR for 2015 as well.
