'Serial' Case to Get Reopened in HBO Documentary

"The Case Against Adnan Syed" will investigate the 1999 disappearance and killing of Hae Min Lee, 18, in Baltimore County and the eventual conviction of her boyfriend, Mr. Syed, of multiple crimes, including first-degree murder and kidnapping.

The four-hour documentary will debut in Europe on Sky Atlantic and in the United States on HBO.

Per an official press release, "In June 2016, Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Martin P. Welch vacated Adnan Syed's conviction and granted him a new trial after new evidence challenged the reliability of cell phone data linking Syed to the crime scene, and a long-awaited alibi witness finally had her day in court".

Syed was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 2000 for Hae Min Lee's murder.

Henrietta Conrad, Jemima Khan, Eric Fellner, Tim Bevan, and Andrew Stearn will executive produce the series, which will hit HBO in the USA and Sky Atlantic in Europe.

As reported by the Baltimore Sun, the office of Attorney General Brian Frosh asked the Maryland Court of Appeals on Monday to overturn the lower-court ruling for the retrial.

Berg has been in production on the series since 2015, charting the various machinations and breakthroughs that have marked the case, including the latest twist.

"We'll be offering viewers a compelling window into one of the most talked about murder cases in recent years", Sky director of programming Zai Bennett told Variety of the series. The show will also feature original music from singer-songwriter Nick Cave. "The hugely talented Amy Berg has unprecedented access to those closest to the investigation, which is sure to make unmissable viewing". An official air date has not yet been announced.
