City of Barrie Marina awarded prestigious Blue Flag certification

Two Sunderland beaches have each won two coveted awards marking their status among the best in the country.

East Lindsey has retained its Blue Flag status for central beaches in Skegness, Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea.

The award looks at the water quality, facilities, beach safety, environmental education and management of the beaches. Our research shows that almost two thirds of parents would prefer to visit beaches with Blue Flag or Seaside Award status, so growing the number of beaches with an award is vital to encourage more families to visit our handsome coastline.

The City of Barrie Marina is one of nine marinas and 27 beaches in Canada to be Blue Flag certified this year.

Only 42 beaches achieved both awards, which include Sandhaven Beach in South Shields.

The Blue Flag award is administered in Canada by Environmental Defence, and is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Portfolio Holder for the Coastal Economy, Coun Steve Kirk, said: "We are delighted to have retained the Blue Flags at all our beaches".

Nearly half of families quizzed said they would leave at once if they spotted dog poo in the sand. We are committed to creating a great environment on our doorstep for everyone to enjoy and offering a quality mark that shows everyone just how fantastic our beaches can be.

"When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an global Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country".
