8 killed, dozens injured as bomb explosion hits funeral near Iraq's Baghdad

According to Reuters, a man wearing an explosive belt blew himself up in the middle of a group of people receiving condolences.

Alice Walpole, strongly condemned the cowardly suicide terrorist attack in the Tarmiya district north of Baghdad today, killing and injuring a number of people. As per reports of Iraqi media outlets, total of 5 were killed and wounded, however the Iraqi government has not confirmed the casualty toll.

The source noted that the terrorist tried to attack a mourning event. In December, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi declared an end to the country's fight against Daesh as Iraqi troops re-established complete control over the country's Syrian border.

"After their military defeat, remnants of the Da'esh terrorist organisation continue to seek to destabilise Iraq".

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for such suicide attacks, targeting areas where crowds of people gather, including markets, cafes and mosques across Iraq.

The group claimed responsibility for a deadly gun attack near Tarmiya two weeks ago. The terrorists killed eight unarmed civilians in the assault.
