TV3 Is Going To Dominate Irish TV Coverage Of The Champions League

RTÉ and TV3 are both able to broadcast Saturday week's final between Liverpool and Real Madrid, but TV3 will have sole coverage of the final going forward.

There is, of course, increased interest in this year's final as Liverpool become the first English team since Chelsea in 2012 to take part in UEFA's showpiece event.

For the third year running, the Champions League and Europa League finals will be free to watch online.

There's also a rare occasion where a half-and-half scarf is an acceptable memento of the occasion!

An industry source questioned how the broadcaster could show all the matches without charging viewers, but it is understood that they could be made available online or as a red-button option.

In addition, the TV3 Group will share the rights to 16 Tuesday night Champion League matches.

For subscribers, the game is being screened on BT Sport 2, BT Sport 2 HD and in 4K on the BT Sport UHD channel.

Liverpool are aiming for an historic sixth European Cup (or Champions League title to use the modern parlance), while Real Madrid can claim a 13th title and a third in a row.

Pat Kiely, Managing Director of TV3 said: "The UEFA Champions League is the biggest and most prestigious club competition in the world and we are delighted to extend our partnership with UEFA for both the Champions League and the UEFA Europa League". Its Champions League gains are a further coup after it secured the rights for rugby's Six Nations and the free-to-air rights for the European Champions Cup. "The final is set to be a classic and we can't wait to bring it to football fans across the United Kingdom".

BT Sport hold the broadcasting rights to the Champions League in the UK.
