Pirates' Starling Marte removed from Tuesday's game with right side discomfort

Over at PNC Park on Wednesday, the Chicago White Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates will be meeting up on the Major League Baseball diamond.

Pirates centerfielder Starling Marte was removed after the first inning of Tuesday night's game against the Chicago White Sox.

Marte was lifted immediately in favor of Sean Rodríguez, with the Pirates announcing that Marte was suffering from discomfort in his right side. In the bottom of the first inning, he doubled to left field and later scored.

The right-hander gave up six hits - five singles - and didn't walk a batter.

Gregory Polanco and Josh Bell had two hits each, Bell drove in three runs. Chicago is also 17-38 in their last 53 road games and 8-20 in Santiago's last 28 starts. I was trying to figure out which way to go, trying to make that adjustment, and I just never figured that out.

The Bucs and White Sox complete their two-game series today at 12:35pm.

The Pirates jumped all over Lopez (0-3) after he had held them to two runs in 7 1/3 innings the last time out.

"I thought we did our homework well last time", he said.

He is 0-3 in six ensuing starts, including giving up a season-high seven runs in 3 2/3 innings April 25 against Detroit. "I feel like, for the most part, we were anticipating slower, earlier and it kind of just worked out for us". It might have otherwise been a game that indicated he had gotten back on track after struggling following a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts April 8 in a 5-0 win over Cincinnati.
