Microsoft Plans Low-Cost Tablet Line to Rival iPad

The good news is that Microsoft is finally planning to launch low-priced Windows 10 tablets under the Surface brand.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the new 10-inch Surface tablets will feature rounded corners similar those found on Apple's iPads, and they'll also be the second Surface devices to come with a USB-C port following the Surface Book 2 a year ago.

Microsoft previously released the $499 Surface RT in 2012 to limited success before switching to the Surface Pro line.

Apple sold about 44 million iPads that generated nearly $20 billion in revenue during the past four quarters.

What's interesting here is the report claims these tablets will ship with Intel processors, and not an ARM chip as so many assumed Microsoft would opt for in a new non-pro Surface device. Like the Surface 3, the new 10-inch device won't come bundled with any accessories, with said accessories being priced lower than the current offerings.

Microsoft shares are down 0.3% to $97.04.

Bloomberg: Microsoft plans lower-cost Surface tablets to battle Apple

I asked Microsoft for comment on the low-end Surface hardware rumors.

The biggest question about these new Surface devices is why. Microsoft is also planning to sell Wi-Fi only models along with Wi-Fi and LTE variants.

Apple recently launched a 2018 iPad model for just $329. Microsoft, which hasn't finalized its plans, is expected to price the cheapest versions of the new device at about $400. It appears that the Microsoft's Surface-branded tablet will compete with this model.

The only tablets that have got a good response from the customers were Apple's iPads. Like Microsoft's other devices, it will run Windows 10 Pro. It will have a 10-inch display, and it won't resemble the look of the traditional Surface devices.

The new line will be part of a growing ecosystem of Microsoft hardware products that, beyond the tablets, includes the Surface Laptop, Surface Book laptop with a detachable screen, and the Surface Studio desktop computer.
