Guatemala Relocates Israel Embassy to Jerusalem

Guatemala will inaugurate its embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday - with its President Jimmy Morales attending - hot on the heels of the USA, while the government in Asuncion said Paraguay's embassy would switch to Jerusalem at the end of this month.

Guatemala has relocated its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, just two days after the US.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales were among officials attending an inauguration ceremony at the new embassy at an office park in the disputed city at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The U.S. and Guatemalan moves break with decades of global consensus.

"You were always among the first", he said.

Morales said Israel and Guatemala have a "deep friendship", hoping that other countries will follow the same move.

USA president Donald Trump announced his decision in December to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the American embassy there, triggering a joyous reaction from Mr Netanyahu's government.

Post the opening of the embassy, violent clashes erupted between Palestinian protesters and Israeli soldiers at the Gaza Strip, resulting in the killing of 62 agitators.
