The retailers said Monday that within the next sixty days, they will begin imposing the time limit on initial opioid prescriptions for acute pain, along with a mandate that the medications top out at 50 morphine milligrams per day.

The change will occur in the next 60 days. The company noted the electronic prescriptions can not be copied or altered and are less prone to errors.

Walmart Inc. supports policies and programs aimed at helping curb opioid abuse and misuse.

In states that allow access, the companys pharmacists will have access to and use the controlled substance tracking tool, NarxCare.

On average, 115 people die in the U.S. each day from an opioid overdose, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now, pharmacists can also counsel patients on how to use DisposeRx and distribute an opioid awareness brochure outlining risks and helpful resources.

"These changes will not only help us decrease the number of prescription opioids that make it to the street, but will help us crack down on fraudulent prescriptions".

These steps are in addition to actions the company has taken as part of the Walmart Opioid Stewardship Initiative in an effort to be part of the solution to our nations opioid epidemic.

The companys pharmacists counsel patients using the CDCs guidelines on pain management, focusing on using the lowest effective dose for pain management for the shortest time possible.

CVS Health said in September that it would limit opioid prescriptions to seven-day supplies for new patients with particular acute conditions.
