Pistons Part Ways With President Of Basketball Ops Stan Van Gundy

Stan Van Gundy was sacked as coach and president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons on Monday, unable to turn the struggling NBA club into a consistent victor.

Most of Detroit woes were attributed to a plague of injuries during the past few seasons, but the team found itself ultimately suffering even after the blockbuster trade for Blake Griffin prior to the trade deadline.

There was a thought that Van Gundy could stay on as coach, if he gave up his executive role. Since Van Gundy was the president of basketball operations and coach of the team, the franchise intends to keep the jobs separate from now on.

Van Gundy tallied a regular season record of 152-176 (.463) with the Pistons. Since then, they've had consecutive seasons where they've gone below.500.

Since coming to Detroit in 2014, the team has only been to the playoffs once, but it didn't go anywhere. Last year, he took Luke Kennard 12, one spot ahead of Donovan Mitchell (selected by Denver and traded to Utah), who might win rookie of the year.

The trade for Griffin was a bold one for the Pistons and left them with limited flexibility.

The Stan Van Gundy era with the Detroit Pistons is over. Not only did the team take on Griffin's big contract, but Detroit also sent a protected first-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Clippers in the deal.

"Stan is a competitor and he wanted to finish the job", Mr. Gores said.

A couple of National Basketball Association franchises have made head coaching changes this spring. The Pistons last won an National Basketball Association playoff game in a 2008 run to the Eastern Conference finals.

In four seasons, the Pistons made the playoffs once - in 2015-16 - and were swept in the first round by the Cavaliers.

"Would like to take a min to wish Stan the best and thank you for everything you've put into our team the last four years", Drummond said Monday in a message on his Twitter account.
