Penguins erase 2-goal deficit, beat Capitals in Game 1

Pittsburgh Penguins Coach Mike Sullivan said Wednesday that forward Evgeni Malkin will not play against Washington in Game 1 of the second-round series Thursday night.

NOTES: The Capitals have killed 18 consecutive penalties dating to Game 2 against Columbus., Malkin skated Thursday morning with teammates, while Hagelin did not make the trip. Malkin's injury was self-inflicted while Carl Hagelin's was the result of Claude Giroux's needless hit in the last series.

Matt Murray stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced to put the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champions ahead in yet another series with Game 2 on Sunday in Washington.

Malkin missed the Penguins' series-clinching win over the Philadelphia Flyers after suffering an injury in Game 5. "We worry about who's in the lineup". Both Crosby and Guentzel have seven goals on this postseason, while Guentzel has factored into eight of the Penguins' past nine goals over the past two games.

Moving Sheahan up from the fourth line allows Sullivan to keep his third line of Brassard centering Conor Sheary and Bryan Rust intact.

Pittsburgh showed how risky its offense can be without Malkin (and, for most of the game, Hagelin) in its series-clinching 8-5 win in Game 6 against Philadelphia.

"It definitely sucks that we don't have those two guys". The second line, though it still features Phil Kessel, is noticeably weaker without him. The Capitals likely will use Kuznetsov's line or the second line of Nicklas Backstrom centering Chandler Stephenson and T.J. Oshie against Crosby's line.

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored 17 seconds in and Ovechkin beat Murray 28 seconds into the third period for the Capitals, who lost a game started by Braden Holtby for the first time in these playoffs. Filling in for the 29-year-old will likely be Dominik Simon - who is penciled in for a top-six role as a direct replacement. "So we have a good team regardless".

Washington had a similar opportunity against the Penguins in the second round last season when Crosby missed Game 4 because of a concussion.

Game 2 is Saturday in Washington, with Pittsburgh gunning for a 2-0 series lead and its 10th series victory in 11 playoff meetings with the Capitals. Especially since it appears Malkin will at least be an option to play in Game 2.
