Naxals Killed in 'Encounter' in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Fourteen Naxals were killed on Sunday in an encounter with the police in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, a senior official said.

"After receiving credible inputs on the movement of Perimili Dalam near Tadgaon in Bhamragad tehsil, the operation was launched on Saturday".

Confirming the development, Inspector General of Police, Sharad Shelar said, that 14 Naxalites were killed in the encounter that started in the morning.

This time of year is the onset of "Tendu Patta" season where Tendu leaves are harvested. They had a tip-off that Naxals from other areas will also be gathering in the area.

He said the combing operation, which started in the morning, was now underway at Tadgaon forest in Bhamragad, around 750 kilometres from Mumbai. The encounter began at around 9.30 am.

In the combing operations after that, police recovered two more bodies, sources have said.

"There certainly are some naxals injured in the encounter and once the combing operation ends, the exact figure of killed and injured naxals will be known", sources added. However, exact details of that were not readily available.

On Sunday, one of the biggest anti-Naxal operation got success for Gadchiroli police till date.

In 2017, a total number of 19 Naxalites were killed in an encounter region at Gadchiroli.
