European MPs warn Trump against undermining the Iran nuclear deal

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani yesterday said Iran's atomic agency was ready with "expected and unexpected" reactions if the United States pulls out of a multinational nuclear deal, as US President Donald Trump has threatened to do.

However Trump has put United States involvement in the deal on life support, and is reportedly planning to withdraw Washington's support before a May 12 deadline.

Trump has threated to pull out of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal signed by the US and other world powers and Iran.

Britain, France and Germany have been engaged in "intensive talks" with Washington to maintain support for the Iran nuclear deal beyond the May 12 deadline, but nothing has yet to be agreed.

Trump has called the agreement one of the worst deals ever negotiated.

In January, Trump announced that he would extend sanctions relief for Iran, given that the country was in compliance with the nuclear deal.

"The Europeans, E-3 in particular, have been working hard in trying to address some of our most important or prominent concerns having to do with Iran's ballistic missile programme, for example, the sunset clause in the JCPOA and so on", the senior administration official said, referring to the agreement by its acronym.

During the visit, the two presidents are expected to discuss the landmark 2015 nuclear deal signed by the United States and other world powers and Iran, the official said.

"That work is not quite done yet", the official added.

Iran, on its part, has maintained it will respect the agreement as long as the other nations do but will "shred" it if the USA pulls out.

Iranian state TV quoted Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as saying on his arrival in NY that Iran has several options if the United States leaves the nuclear deal.

"We have put a number of options for ourselves, and those options are ready, including options that would involve resuming at a much greater speed our nuclear activities", he said.
