Hamas confirmed that al-Batsh was a member of the Gaza-based terrorist group. It gave no further details on his scientific accomplishments but said he had made "important contributions" and took part in global forums in the field of energy.

A Hamas statement said al-Batsh was "assassinated at treacherous hands on Saturday.as he walked for the dawn prayers". His family members have accused Israel's Mossad of assassinating him.

Fadi Albatash, an electrical engineer affiliated with Hamas, was shot dead Saturday by two motorcyclists in Malaysia, according to a report in the Palestinian Safa news agency.

Police say closed-circuit television showed him targeted by the assassins who had waited for him for nearly 20 minutes.

A senior leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, Khaled al-Batsh, also accused the Mossad of being responsible for the killing and called on Malaysian authorities to act quickly so as to prevent those responsible from fleeing the country.

The Israeli government had no comment. He worked as a teacher at a private university and was active in a Malaysian charity for Palestinian welfare.

Batash had reportedly lived in Malaysia for the past decade.

However, Israeli media reported that he was also deeply involved in the Hamas drone development project.

In recent weeks, tensions have been running high at the Gaza-Israel border as Palestinians have ramped up protests demanding the right to return to their former homeland.
