Missing south Kashmir Army man joins Hizb

An army man, who has been missing since Saturday, is believed to have joined terror group Hizbul Mujahideen, along with two others, in Shopian district of South Kashmir, police said here on Monday. The jawan- named Idrees Mir was posted in the Army's Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI).

Mir was posted in Bihar and was on leave. However, local media reports say the terror outfit released a picture of the runaway soldier holding an AK-47 and claiming he had joined it.

"Details are being ascertained", said Col Rajesh Kalia, a Srinagar-based defence spokesperson.

"The family filed a missing report only Monday".

Shahid was arrested by the NIA in October a year ago after he was found receiving and collecting funds through global wire money transfer from Saudi Arabia-based Hizbul Mujahideen member Aijaz Ahmed Bhat.

The development comes barely a fortnight after Mir's neighbour Yawar Ahmad Yatoo was killed in an encounter at Draggad village of Shopian.

Another Army man is believed to have joined militancy previous year. Bhat's picture, too, was uploaded by militants on social media. Two policemen from south Kashmir, Ishfaq Ahmad Dar and Syed Naveed also joined militant outfits.

Shopian SSP Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar told Express it was confirmed that the army man had joined the militant group.Dinkar said that according to his family, Idrees had left home on Sunday evening and not returned. While Dar joined Lashkar-e-Toiba, Naveed is associated with Hizbul Mujahideen.
