76ers' Hall of Fame guard Greer, 81, dies

Hal Greer, Hall of Fame guard, former Marshall Basketball Player, and the Philadelphia 76ers' career leading scorer, has died. He was named to the NBA's 50th anniversary team in 1996.

Facing the San Francisco Warriors, a team that had relocated from Philadelphia five years earlier, in the 1967 NBA Finals, the 76ers won in six games.

Born in 1936 in Huntington, West Virginia, Greer became Marshall University's first-ever African-American scholarship athlete and played three seasons for the Thundering Herd, averaging 19.4 points over his collegiate career.

Greer was chosen into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame along with Willie Reed, Frank Ramsey, Slater Martin, Clarence Gaines and also Ava Duer.

A 10-time All-Star, Greer was named as one of the NBA's 50 greatest players, led the Sixers to the 1967 National Basketball Association title and had his number retired by the franchise in 1976.

The Philadelphia 76ers announced Monday that Greer died Saturday night in Arizona after a brief illness.

Greer was the first player to have his jersey number retired by the club and to be honored with a statue on 76ers Legends Walk at its training complex.

The Sixers said Greer was survived by his wife Mayme, a son and two daughters.

"In addition to his historic contributions on the court, Greer will forever be remembered as a true gentleman who used the tremendous platform of basketball to uplift and inspire others", the team added.

"We extend our deepest condolences and send our love to the Greer family during this hard time".

The Sixers will honor Greer before their playoff game against the Miami Heat on Monday night.
