Mourinho fumes after defeat hands title to City

Manchester City have been crowned Premier League champions after their rivals Manchester United slumped to a shock 1-0 home loss to struggling West Brom on Sunday.

United simply had to avoid defeat to keep the title race mathematically alive, but a late header from Jay Rodriguez gave West Brom a hugely surprising three points and finally gave their fans something to cheer this season.

JOSE MOURINHO PLAYED down the significance of Manchester United's home surrender to West Brom on Sunday, signalling that Man City deserved to win the Premier League on their own merits.

More importantly, though, it means Pep Guardiola's City team can not now be caught at the top of the table, thus handing the Catalan coach his first Premier League crown in just his second year in English football.

Guardiola has won the League Cup already for City this season but a first Premier League title, to go with the three La Liga titles he won as manager of Barcelona and the three Bundesliga titles he delivered for Bayern Munich, will be particularly satisfying for the Spaniard.

Mourinho claimed afterwards that he had not been happy after the City result because he knew they would win the league regardless and he accused some of his players of getting carried away.

"As much as this has been a record breaking season, this one's for you, the fans, this is why we do it!" said the skipper. Everything was complicated, players they didn't want to play simple.

Mourinho had told them to turn down their music and United players did not forget to the incident as they replayed the scene to their neighbours, The Sun reports.

"I think we were deservedly punished because we were masters in complication".

United's performance was in stark contrast to their display against City last time out, and Mourinho's team selection is also likely to come under scrutiny.

"I trust in my work, that is for sure, I have no reason not to trust".

"I know that sooner or later that would be and if I was in that position I would be very upset if somebody say they won the title because Manchester United lost to West Bromwich Albion", said Mourinho.

He added: "You can win the Champions League in seven games, the league is 10 months".

Pogba was substituted after 57 minutes of United's defeat and Mourinho did not make any attempt to hide his unhappiness with the team's performance and the inconsistency of his most expensive player. You have to be consistent at every level, not just the performance level.

"After beating Manchester City we wanted a winning spirit until the end of the season but today was one of those days. I think that we have given proof of what this group is - it is a group of good guys".
