Manchester City wins title with Manchester United loss

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has challenged his teammates to improve again next season as they look to retain the Premier League title.

"This season has been incredible and the football we've played has been the best I've been involved with while at the club".

It won't make good reading for the likes of Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp and the rest of the managers won't want to be battling for the title of the best of the rest for the next few years.

What would have been most disappointing for the Old Trafford outfit is the fact that it was them that handed their "noisy neighbours" the title instead of making them wait even longer for it.

"Playing in the Champions League at that age, sometimes it's complicated and maybe it's a good lesson for them for the future and for next season".

"I knew that sooner or later they would be (champions) and if I was in their position I would be very upset if someone said they won the title because Manchester United lost against West Brom".

It was always a matter of when rather than if City would be champions after they led the way for most of the season.

Going back to the United and Arsenal rivalry from the late 90s it would be brilliant if one team could mark themselves out as actually having a chance to challenge City next term and going forward.

Sergio Aguero, who became City's record goalscorer this season, added: "Ecstatic about clinching another title with this great team, and with all the support of our fans". City now lead United by 16 points and by the end of the season they could very well re-write the record books.

Guardiola's players will focus on those targets once they have recovered from a boisterous evening of celebrations in Manchester.

West Brom hadn't won in the Premier League since January, losing nine of their last 10 league games to slip to the brink of relegation.

"It just shows how football is lived in Manchester - we've got Reds in the family we've got Blues in the family", he said.

City have unquestionably been the best team in England but their status has been undermined by their Champions League exit.

It's their first Premier League win under Guardiola, and given the plans implemented this season, you sense it won't be the last time they finish top of the pile under him.

Ian Rush and Roger Hunt were the others with Rush's single season record of 47 goals now well within reach for the prolific Egyptian.

"I think we share one thing - he's been able to transfer to the team that hunger and desire to never be satisfied".

Speaking after Saturday's 3-1 win over Tottenham, the 47-year-old gave all the credit to his players.
