Crews respond to rapidly spreading brush fire

Fire Chief Steve Scholl said about one acre of ground was burned in that blaze.

Officials said they were unsure of what caused the fire, but said they believe it could have been sparked by a power line in the wooded area with mountainous terrain.

A brush fire broke out along the 54 Freeway in National City late Sunday morning, and witnesses blamed a man seen throwing something into the brush shortly before the blaze started.

Dry conditions and high winds were contributing to brush fires around the region Friday.

Linsenbigler said there were no people or livestock injured in the brush fire, and buildings in the area were unaffected.

A Butler County dispatcher said there had been fires in Cranberry, Buffalo and Marion townships. Because of strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures, any fires that develop will spread rapidly.

"The Green Creek Road fire is fully contained", Saunders said.

Outdoor burning is not recommended.
