UFC on FOX 29

The "Fight Of The Night" on this occasion was easy to pick out as the main event between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje was as good a striking battle as we've seen in 2018 so far.

The UFC on Fox 29 headliner may very well take its toll on Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje down the road, but it will boost their bank accounts in the more immediate future.

Poirier secured a fourth round victory over Gaethje at UFC Fight Night, in Arizona, despite a badly injured right leg and a swollen right eye. In his last nine fights, Poirier is 7-1 with a no-contest vs. Eddie Alvarez.

While it may sound like a far-away possibility with Nurmagomedov seemingly headed for a vast grudge match with former champ Conor McGregor, UFC President Dana White was understandably complimentary of "The Diamond" when discussing the insane match-up at UFC on FOX 29 with Megan Olivi during the post-fight show on FOX Sports 2.

"Twenty 20 in the UFC, up and down weight classes", Poirier said. In the end it was Poirier who capitalized in the fourth round when he clipped Gaethje and then poured on the pressure, forcing the rubber legged Gaethje across the cage and finally to the canvas for a stoppage.

"I'm content with what just happened, as insane and as stupid as that sounds", said Gaethje, the No. 6 lightweight.

"As I thought about the possibilities this fight could take, I knew I would have to dig down deep, I knew trouble would present itself", Poirier said. "I don't fight to win or lose". With a little over three minutes left, Gaethje stunned Poirier with a punch upstairs, and as the fight went to the fence, Gaethje went on the attack.

Gaethje staggered Poirier with a hard right early in the third round, but was deducted a point late by referee Herb Dean for hitting with an open hand the second time in the fight.
