Ricciardo wins incredible Chinese Grand Prix

Lap 27: Raikkonen is passed by Bottas as the Mercedes takes the lead of the race into Turn Two.

Verstappen and the two Mercedes cars were the first of the leaders to pit, but Ferrari left Vettel out on old tyres for two laps too long, and Bottas got the jump on the Ferrari to take the lead.

Only Red Bull among the frontrunners pits as Verstappen and Ricciardo put on softs.

Paying tribute to his mechanic, Ricciardo said: "They did very well, the mechanics should be celebrating, they did a great job".

Ricciardo's win came courtesy of an inspired strategic call when the race was neutralised due to debris on-track following a collision between the Toro Rosso drivers.

But the safety vehicle threw in a curve ball and Red Bull grabbed their chance.

"I don't seem to win boring races", said Ricciardo after claiming his first victory since last June's Azerbaijan Grand Prix. They're all pretty fun. In the end it's relatively close, we're at the tail end of the top six which isn't ideal, but I think with all things considered it wasn't a bad afternoon and I'm just thankful that the team were able to get me out there.

Hamilton apologised to his team for losing places. Verstappen finished fourth on the road but received a ten-second penalty for his collision with Vettel on 43, dropping him to fifth in the final standings.

The German locked a wheel going into the hairpin on lap 43 and ran a little wide. The stewards concurred, slapping the Red Bull man with a timed penalty.

Lap 53: Raikkonen catches Bottas with Verstappen just behind.

Behind him, Renault's Nico Hulkenberg drove a solid race for sixth, ahead of Alonso and an angry Vettel.

Daniel Ricciardo won a sensational Chinese Grand Prix, cutting through the field in the closing stages like a knife through butter.

Lap 56: Ricciardo crosses the line for victory. He had a tyre advantage, yes, but he made a series of brilliant overtaking moves, and gave Verstappen a lesson in how to balance aggression with judgement. What happens next?

"I was obviously prepared [to qualify] but didn't really expect it", Ricciardo said.

The French producer has had a challenging time coming to terms with all the 1.6 liter v 6 turbo-hybrid electricity units launched at the beginning of both 2014 and, five years ago, nevertheless frees Mercedes and Ferrari.
