Paul Ryan: 'No plans to run for anything'

Republicans, who wouldn't dare challenge the speaker, can now give it a shot.

Long before Ryan made his retirement plans official, there was talk about his future replacement, and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana were often cited as the two front-runners.

"If they want to go down this path, which won't be successful ... we wouldn't be able to pass an appropriations bill" for the fiscal year beginning on October 1, he said.

"Speaker Ryan sees what is coming in November, and is calling it quits rather than standing behind a House Republican agenda", said Tyler Law, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, in a statement.

"Realistically, the chances were low of anything getting done anyway", Feehery said.

Mr Ryan, a Republican from Janesville, Wisconsin, was first elected to Congress in 1998.

Banks said that Ryan, who announced earlier in the day that he will not seek re-election this year in his Wisconsin district, "deserves an enormous amount of credit, if not most of the credit" for legislation enacted late last year that cut income taxes and increased military sending.

Ryan joins a parade of legislators - majority Republicans - who've said they have had enough, one way or another, and will give up their seats. Trump's mercurial style also makes the speaker's job harder: Ryan won't soon forget Trump's threat to veto a spending bill approved last month, a bill crafted in close consultation with the White House.

Since announcing Wednesday that he would finish his current term but not seek another, Ryan has been criticized as an enabler of Trump.

On Wednesday, Trump wrote on Twitter: "Speaker Paul Ryan is a truly good man, and while he will not be seeking re-election, he will leave a legacy of achievement that nobody can question". I'm not going to run for president. "But we have a lot of strong Republicans running in contested races", he said.

Ryan's decision was timely. In addition to serving on the House Budget and Banking committees together, I consider Paul a good friend and speak with certainty in saying he is a terrific public servant, husband, and father.

In the 2012 US presidential election, he was the Republican Party nominee for Vice President of the United States, running alongside former MA governor Mitt Romney.

"I don't like what he's done with the state or any of the other Republicans in this state and I'm happy to see him gone and would like to see a change", Gibson says. "You were one of the main people who said you want to do more for the Republican Party to expand". So Paul Ryan had to defend his party on national television.

Ryan suffered a major defeat, however, when Congress rejected a measure he strongly backed to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Costello, Mast and most other Republicans stuck to their message in the hallways of Congress Wednesday morning, but speaking on background and away from cameras, many GOP lawmakers expressed concerns.

Right now, Ryan will go down as one of the worst House Speakers in history.
