New Jersey declares "Bon Jovi Day"

Bon Jovi, who have sold more than 120 million albums and launched multiple No. 1 hits, was first nominated in 2011.

The Democratic governor hailed the "five musicians from New Jersey communities (who) believed in their dream and used their talents to form Bon Jovi, one of the most famous, enduring rock bands of all time". It was a surprise for the group members in attendance: Jon Bon Jovi (with his wife and four children), David Bryan, Tico Torres, Hugh McDonald, Richie Sambora, and Alec John Such (who will be inducted tonight).

Simone, who died in 2003, was a leader in pushing for civil rights and influenced everyone from Aretha Franklin to Alicia Keys. "I am considering doing one of the new songs and that is something that's just not done".

Tharpe died in 1973 and was a pioneering guitarist who performed gospel music.

Gov. Phil Murphy made the declaration Saturday, hours before the platinum-selling New Jersey band was to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Cleveland. Fans also were able to vote on the Rock Hall's website.

Alan Clark of Dire Straits laughed in the bottom level food court as he spoke about how he claimed that he, bassist John Illsley and keyboardist Guy Fletcher would play an acoustic version of the epic "Telegraph Road" in the absence of frontman Mark Knopfler - and that it was taken seriously. "We're very grateful to the Rock Hall of Fame for being that temple for all the music we loved while growing up", said Moody Blues singer-guitarist Justin Hayward.

Simone received a passionate and show-stopping tribute from groundbreaking performers who she has deeply inspired, from Lauryn Hill to Mary J. Blige. The Cars, founded in Boston in 1976, combined New Wave and classic rock sounds. All of the inductees had to have released their first recording no later than 1992 to be eligible.

The 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will air May 5 on HBO and will also be heard on SiriusXM Radio.
