If you're driving along Fly Road in East Syracuse - you may notice hundreds of blue pinwheels outside a local business.

Effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships among agencies, schools, religious organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community. Each pinwheel was planted to symbolize a joyful childhood memory, but also to raise awareness on child abuse in the county. In this podcast segment, Jim and Doug discuss how police should respond to reports of FGM. She said gathering in the center of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge symbolizes the combined efforts of agencies on both sides of the river in combatting child abuse and neglect, a problem that knows no state lines.

He said it's easy to get pigeonholed in the circle of one's family and friends and forget to "open our eyes to what's going on around us".

Livable wages, flexible work schedules, access to high-quality early care, and letting parents know that "it's OK to ask for help" are key areas where improvements could be made, she said.

He said he hopes the Pass the Pinwheel event is the "spark for some more education for all of us". "Every child deserves the support of caring, consistent, trained adult to help them find a safe, loving home where they can heal and thrive".

The Family and Children's Center says there were more than 2,000 eported cases of abuse in Winona County previous year. In fact, child abuse and neglect have been declared a national emergency as a complex and growing problem in our nation. "We want to give people these skills and build their toolboxes so they can learn to cope with situations in a healthy way".

The Naperville Exchange Club and the Naperville Exchange Club Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, d/b/a Project H.E.L.P., through its support of parent mentor programs, educational programs and community service activities, continually strives to prevent child maltreatment by reducing the risk factors associated with child abuse and neglect.
