CBI detains woman aide of Sengar

The name of the detained woman is Shashi Singh, who allegedly took the victim to Sengar on the day of crime.

India's BJP lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar, accused of raping a 16-year-old girl last year, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday afternoon. The teen had accused the MLA of raping her in June a year ago. She had also alleged that while the MLA was raping her daughter, Shashi Singh stood outside the room as a guard.

"The CBI may also consider whether cancellation of bail of all the accused in Crime No. 0316 of 2017 is necessary for carrying out free and fair further investigation", it said, as it asked the agency to submit a status report by May 2. She tried to immolate herself in front of the CM's residence in Lucknow on April 8 after repeated pleas for justice were not heeded.

Within hours of taking over the investigation, the CBI brought Sengar, who had remained untouched by the state police, to its office in Lucknow, where he was questioned for almost 16 hours before being taken into custody.

The third one relates to Sengar's brother Atul Singh, who claimed that he was attacked by the victim's father. He also said that the family still fears for their life but were hopeful that no harm would come to them as the premier investigative agency had now taken up the case.

The Congress, led by RahulGandhi, held a candlelight vigil on Thursday night, demanding action from the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. The second one was about rioting, in which four locals have been booked, and also the alleged killing of the victim's father in judicial custody. He died in custody on April 9.

Senior Uttar Pradesh minister and spokesperson of the state government Siddharth Nath Singh said the law will take its own course and lashed out at the opposition for "shedding crocodile tears" on the issue of women's safety. The CBI then visited the girl's home for questioning and also questioned the doctors who had treated her at Unnao District Hospital.

CBI sources privy to the probe told TOI that the statements of the accused and the survivor and others would be examined and later both would be brought face-to face in order to get clarity in the case.

Sengar, a four-term MLA, enjoys vast clout cutting across party lines in the rural areas around Unnao district, a semi-urban area about 70 km from Lucknow.
