11-year-old girl's body found with 86 injuries, rape suspected — Surat

A 5-hour long postmortem of the girl revealed that she had been raped and tortured for a period of at least 8 days and was later strangled to death.

Police said the post-mortem suggested some wooden object was used to cause the injuries. "Teams have been going through missing person complaints".

"The body of the 11-year-old girl was found around 6 am near a road next to a cricket ground by people on their morning walk". Giving details on the case, Ganesh Govekar, Forensic Head, Civil Hospital, told ANi, "The girl's body had 86 injury marks including ones on her private parts".

Police inspector B.K. Jhala said, "Even after eight days, the parents of the girl are yet to be identified".

He added the victim - who was 11, has not yet been identified and that police from Gujarat's neighbouring states have been asked to help trace her family.

A reward of Rs 20,000 has been declared for anyone given that information about the victim or her family.

While the country is outraged over the Kathua and Unnao rape cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday broke his silence saying that incidents like these could not be a part of any civilised society and promised to make sure that the culprits do not get away.

Police have registered a case under sections 302 (punishment for murder), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), and 376 (punishment for rape), and under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Her attackers, which included temple official and policemen, drugged and gang raped her over days before finally killing her and dumping her body in a forest nearby, seven days later.

"I want to assure the country that no culprit will be spared, complete justice will be done". The Forensic Science Laboratory team has collected samples and will conduct tests to ascertain if she was sexually assaulted before being murdered. "Our daughters will definitely get justice", the honorable PM added further.

The government has been targeted by the Opposition, along with the civil society, over the rape cases in Kathua and Unnao - where an 18-year-old was allegedly gangraped by a local MLA and his accomplices.
