Arsene Wenger: Arsenal were 'in trouble' before recovery in Moscow

ARSENAL survived a scare in Russian Federation last night to reach the last four of the Europa League and stay on course for a place in next season's Champions League.

"You could see when you have a big difference after the first game it is hard to turn up with the same urgency than if the difference is very small and that played a part in the first half", Wenger said.

They were punished for slack defending in each half through Chalov and Nababkin, though, as Viktor Goncharenko's side showed signs they would punish the Gunners' complacency and snatch a spot in the last four.

However, Atletico had the better of chances to increase their lead in the second half, and though a goal didn't come, they still saw out the game to advance.

"They were very focused and played well as they attempted to score", Elneny said following the game, which saw him provide the two assists of Arsenal's two goals.

Arsenal go into Friday's draw for the semi-finals along with Atletico Madrid, Marseille and Red Bull Salzburg, who overcame Lazio 6-5 on aggregate after a thrilling 4-1 second-leg win.

Aaron Ramsey would complete the Gunners' comeback as he scored in the second minute of added time to ensure his team's passage to the semis on a comfortable 6-3 aggregate scoreline. "Let's prepare well for the next round and see who we get".

Stefan Ilsanker's own goal put Marseille level on the night and the French club were ahead inside 10 minutes when a lighting counter-attack ended with Bouna Sarr firing home. "Once we scored the 2-1, it was a big blow for them, and they didn't recover from that".

Leipzig poured forward looking for the decisive away goal but Marseille's Hiroki Sakai broke clear in stoppage time to seal victory, firing into an empty net.

A brilliant Dimitri Payet finish for Marseille's fourth was a highlight as they made it through to a first European semi-final since 2004.
