Bruins' Zdeno Chara signs extension to return for 21st season

Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, the 41-year-old defenseman having a resurgent season, has chose to return for 2018-19.

The new one-year extension is worth $5.0M and includes up to $1.75M in performance bonuses.

Chara was in the final year of his contract, which he signed back in 2011. The same applies to fellow defenseman Charlie McAvoy (knee), with added clarity on the duo's status likely to arrive prior to Thursday night's showdown against the Lightning. He's been on the shelf for the past week due to an upper-body injury, but is expected to return soon for the stretch run and the postseason.

Chara has seven goals and 16 assists this season, his 20th in the National Hockey League.

He ransk seventh in franchise history in games played (888) and is third in points (452) behind only Hall of Famers Ray Boutque (1,506) and Bobby Orr (888).
