Manchester United veteran midfielder Michael Carrick announces end of season retirement

Carrick has played a limited role for United this season after undergoing a routine heart procedure following a League Cup tie with Burton in September.

Carrick has made three appearances in all competitions since returning from the heart complaint, but the skipper is still hoping to have a say in United's fortunes before calling time on his playing career.

"It's fine, it's something you've got to accept so that is where I'm at".

While Carrick has always had his critics, he has been admired by every United coach he's worked with, from Alex Ferguson all the way through to Mourinho.

However, after seeing his playing time get restricted to just four appearances this season, largely due to a heart condition, the 36-year-old Carrick has made a decision to call time on a glittering career. As such, he's likely to take on a coaching role from next season - discussions are ongoing but "it's been kind of sorted out".

Obviously, the news has come as an upsetting incident for United fans, but won't be too anxious about a replacement for the 36-year-old with the current emergence of youngster Scott McTominay.

"Now it's totally fine", Carrick said in the press conference previewing Tuesday's Champions League last-16 second leg against Sevilla.

The 36-year-old arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006. "But he's still got some way to go to fully establish himself as a big player for this club but so far he's on a great track, he's given himself the best possible chance to fulfil that." .

"So, I was determined to get back fit".

"I think it is quite refreshing to look at Scott and see how he deals with it", he said on the midfielder.

'I understood after getting back fit that I wouldn't be playing as many games as perhaps I might have done, but that's something that I understood.
