Tiger Woods, Ernie Els to serve as Presidents Cup captains

When asked last month about being named as an assistant to Furyk in this year's Ryder Cup, Woods hinted at being a player-captain.

South African Ernie Els will be captain of the worldwide team for next year's Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia, a source told Reuters on Monday.

The development first was reported by the blog Morning Read.

Els, and a victor of four Majors, made his Presidents Cup debut in 1996 and was a member of the only worldwide winning side two years later, and all up, has contested eight Presidents Cups with the last being in 2013. Woods had two birdies and one bogey on the day.

"I still believe that 28 points will be a better competition, like the Ryder Cup: four games on every match", said South African Louis Oosthuizen, who has played in the past three Presidents Cup matches.

Whilst Els might be a logical choice to be the next worldwide team captain, Woods' anticipated appointment comes as more of a surprise, not least because he will be only 43 by the time the match takes place in Melbourne next year.

The Presidents Cup, which began in 1994 and was patterned after the Ryder Cup to give global players from outside Europe a chance to compete, has been one-sided since the start. Els had to make from 6 feet to match him. After it became too dark to continue play, with the pair still tied after three playoff holes, team captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player agreed to end the event in a tie.

Woods referred to it at the time as one of his most nerve-wracking moments.

After years of battling back issues, Woods looked close to his old dominant self on Sunday when he finished runner-up to Englishman Paul Casey at the Valspar Championship. That includes twice in the majors, though Woods won those by 15 shots (2000 U.S. Open) and eight shots (2000 British Open).

The 2019 matches will be December 12-15 at Royal Melbourne, the latest the Presidents Cup has been played.

So, expect some type of format change to reduce the number of points from 30 and minimize the American depth, plus perhaps other tweaks for which Els has lobbied. Hale Irwin is the only playing captain in the Presidents Cup, at the inaugural matches in 1994.
