Netflix Paid Claire Foy Less Than Matt Smith for 'The Crown'

British actress Claire Foy, who starred as a young Queen Elizabeth in the critically acclaimed Netflix series "The Crown", was paid less than her co-star, Matt Smith, according to the television show's producers.

I hope that whoever is replacing Smith (rumor has it that it's Hugh Laurie) will be making less money than Olivia Colman, as promised, because as Mackie said, "no one gets paid more than the Queen". Olivia Colman (Golden Globe victor for AMC's The Night Manager) will take over for Foy as Queen Elizabeth, while the new Prince Philip has yet to be cast.

For the forthcoming third season of the Netflix drama, Prince Phillip has yet to be cast, though Helena Bonham Carter will portray Princess Margaret.

According to Variety, on Tuesday, the show's producers said at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem that Foy, who won a Golden Globe for her work on the show a year ago, made less money than her on-screen husband, actor Matt Smith.

Suzanne Mackie, creative director of Left Bank Pictures, which produced the Netflix series, added: "Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen".

When The Crown premiered in 2016, Smith was the more recognizable star thanks to his 2010-2013 tenure as the 11th Doctor on Doctor Who. Her turn in BBC's Wolf Hall earned her a BAFTA nomination, and the series as a whole was a massive critical and commercial success.

To be fair, Smith also received many award nominations for his work on the show, though it wasn't as resonant a performance as it was for Foy. So it's even a little more ironic that, although Netflix spent nearly $7 million per episode for The Crown, Foy was paid less for her work than Smith was.

Mackie said that going forward, all actresses to tackle the royal role will take home a fatter paycheck, though it's too late for Foy, who has been recast, along with the rest of her co-stars, going into Season 3.
