At least one dead as bus carrying students plunges into Alabama ravine

The bus, carrying students on a school trip from Houston, plunged down the ravine, with authorities rushing to the scene.

A charter passenger bus carrying high band school students from Texas crashed Tuesday morning on Interstate 10 at mile marker 57 near the Alabama/Florida line.

Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack said the students were returning to Houston, Texas, from a spring break trip to Disney World.

About 45 people were on the bus, the sheriff said.

The tour bus, which was transporting a high-school band, crashed off the Interstate 10 expressway into a 60ft ravine, injuring between 12 and 20 people, according to a statement from the Sheriff's Office.

Chris Elliott, a Baldwin County commissioner said: "We have multiple injuries; the bus went down into a ravine".

Injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Baldwin County as well as Sacred Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, Piggott said.

The crash shut down I-10 in both directions.

Authorities in Alabama say a charter tour bus carrying students on a school trip from Houston, Texas, has plunged into a ravine, with multiple injuries reported.

"We have one confirmed fatality", he said.

WEAR-TV reports that the charter bus was carrying at least 52 people and the crash happened around 6 a.m.

Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Major Anthony Lowery said the bus ran off the highway before dawn. "Some were carried out by either deputies or other law enforcement", the sheriff said, explaining the depth of the ravine complicated rescue efforts.

Lowery said uninjured passengers will be reunited with family members and Channelview school officials at Coastal Church on County Road 64 in Daphne, Alabama. She had pain in her legs and bruising but was otherwise unscathed, and taken to a hospital for evaluation, he said.
