Trial court sends Karti Chidambaram to Tihar Jail for 12 Days

Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union minister P Chidambaram has been sent to judicial custody till March 24, 2018, in connection with the INX Media Case.

The CBI Special Judge, Sunil Rana, denied the request for a separate cell and washroom, saying it would lead to Karti being "treated differently than other accused persons", quoted News18. So, he should be treated as other inmates in the Tihar jail as per prescribed manuals. P. Chidambaram was present in the court when the judge announced his order.

"In view of the fact that no more police custody remand of accused is sought by CBI, accused Karti Chidambaram is remanded to judicial custody".

He argued that Karti's security was in danger as his father Chidambaram as Union home minister had dealt with terror cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

"The apprehension raised by the senior counsel for accused can not be ignored keeping in view the social status of accused and his family, more specifically, his father who is a former union minister".

"The apprehension raised by the senior counsel of the accused can not be ignored keeping in view the social status of the accused and his family, more specifically his father, who is a former union minister".

"Only keeping in view the fact of social status of accused and his father, he can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in a separate prison", the court said.

Jail authorities should ensure proper security and safety as per rules, he said. Fiercely replying to the Karti's plea, CBI has said that there was no threat to the petitioner.

"Therefore, under the circumstances when there is sufficient material clearly implicating the accused in this serious economic offence, it is absolutely necessary that the accused be remanded to the judicial custody", it said.

Earlier on Monday, the CBI asked the court to send Karti Chidambaram, who is lodged in Tihar jail, to judicial custody for 15 days. It has submitted its investigation proceedings in the form of a case diary to the court. The CBI produced Karti in the court after his three-day police custody in the INX Media corruption case expired and sought 15 days judicial custody.

He was arrested in February for allegedly taking money to facilitate Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media in 2007 when his father was the Finance Minister in the UPA Government.
