Ronaldo rescues Real Madrid late on

Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a brace to help Real Madrid see off Eibar 2-1 in La Liga on Saturday.

The home side levelled through Ivan Ramis five minutes after the break and there were chances at both ends before Ronaldo bulleted home a header five minutes from time.

Madrid was six minutes away from dropping points when Ronaldo came through with a powerful header to send in Dani Carvajal's cross and grab victory.

After their Champions League victory over Paris St-Germain, another success for Zidane's side means they have won eight of their past nine matches across all competitions.

Real move four points behind second-placed Atletico Madrid, who can restore that gap to seven with a win over Celta Vigo on Sunday.

"(Ronaldo) is from another galaxy", Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said.

'The numbers speak for themselves and I'm just glad he is with us.

"Luka was out for nearly three weeks, came back and played very well", he said. But he was running really well, if not faster than normal, so something seemed fishy.

A sloppy pass out from the back by Anaitz Arbilla conceded possession to Modric, who quickly picked out Ronaldo. The Welshmen though glanced his header from the resultant corner just wide of the target.

Real hero Ramos suddenly left the pitch on 76 minutes with the score at 1-1 and the game very much in the balance. They would soon prove costly misses.

The Spain worldwide returned to the pitch in the 78th minute, shortly before Cristiano Ronaldo struck the winning goal in a 2-1 win for Zinedine Zidane's side. His whipped cross found the leaping Ronaldo and he made no mistake.

Eibar attempted to get back into the match for the second time, but Real were able to hold on to an important win which effectively keeps the club in the race for the runners-up spot in Spain's top flight.
