Knifeman killed at Iran ambassador's Vienna home

"The soldier defended himself well and was then able to reach for his service weapon and fire shots", he added.

"The attacker stabbed the soldier repeatedly".

Police guard in front of the Iranian ambassador's residence after an attack in Vienna. "They started a fight because the aggressor was too close and the soldier shot him at least four times with his handgun".

The soldier sustained cuts to his right arm but was protected from more serious injuries by his stab-proof jacket.

The motive of the attack remains unknown and an investigation has been launched into the incident.

According to early indications he "acted within the rules", a ministry of defence spokesman said, according to the APA agency. An unknown assailant carried out a knife attack outside the Iranian Ambassador's residence in Vienna, Austria.

The spokesman said the attacker was a 26-year-old Austrian man.

Police have ordered reinforcements around all diplomatic missions in the city. A 23-year-old Afghan man later confessed to those attacks.
