Helicopter upside down in the East River

Authorities are responding to a helicopter crash in New York City's East River.

The chopper went down near Gracie Mansion at about 7:15 p.m., a high-ranking source said.

It wasn't immediately clear how many people were on the helicopter.

It nearly looked very surreal and next thing we know it's approaching the water slowly and then it just completely crashed and then sunk.

Eric Phillips, a spokesman for the mayor, said the mayor has been briefed and FDNY divers are in the water.

This is a breaking story and it will be updated as details are released. The helicopter was carrying five tourists and a pilot who were trapped inside as the helicopter sank.

The US Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed the aircraft went down at about 7pm local time and said it was "inverted in the water".
