The former All-pro running back is expected to participate in Arizona's offseason activities and likely will reclaim his starting role next season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Cardinals will release Peterson on Monday.

The team would have to pay the running back $750,000 if he was still with Arizona by Friday, which is the third day of the National Football League calendar year.

He had games of 134 and 159 yards with the Cardinals but otherwise totaled 155 yards in the four other games before suffering a season-ending neck injury in Week 12.

As part of the trade, the Cardinals sent New Orleans a conditional sixth-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Cardinals acquired Peterson several weeks after starter David Johnson suffered a Week 1 wrist injury, which ruled him out for the rest of the season.

"I think I would want to play maybe four more years, four to five more years", Peterson told the St. Paul Pioneer Press last month.
