Holocaust Museum Revokes Award to Aung San Suu Kyi

On Thursday Holocaust museum in the USA has withdrawn a prestigious human rights award it had bestowed on Myanmar's civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi for the ongoing brutality against the Rohingya Muslim.

The United States Holocaust Museum has written to Ms Suu Kyi to rescind the Elie Wiesel Award, given annually to those who "confront hatred, prevent genocide and promote human dignity".

Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi smiles as she holds a certificate after she received the Freedom of the City of Dublin during a ceremony in Dublin, Ireland, June 2012.

Other countries are reluctant to directly intervene in the utterly inhumane treatment that Myanmar is perpetrating against the Rohingya, but we could perhaps bring worldwide shame upon her and her government by petitioning the Nobel Committee to revoke her prize.

Since security forces renewed what they call "clearance operations" last August, more than 671,000 Rohingya, majority children, have fled Myanmar for neighboring Bangladesh with little more than accounts of the atrocities they witnessed. The UN labeled the actions as ethnic cleansing.

"We understand the hard situation you must face in confronting decades of military misrule and violence in your country and that institution's still powerful constitutional role", the statement continued.

Instead, it said, her political party, the National League for Democracy, has refused to cooperate with United Nations investigators and added to the anti-Rohingya rhetoric.

"The military's orchestration of the crimes against Rohingya and the severity of the atrocities in recent months demand that you use your moral authority to address this situation", they said.

Human rights organizations around the world have condemned the attacks on the Rohingya people and in November, the US government declared the situation in Myanmar an example of "ethnic cleansing".
